Similarities:
1. They both must displace their own weight in water, plus the weight of everything they carry. Otherwise they’d sink.
2. They both require hull shapes that reduce drag as much as possible because their power source is not that powerful.
Differences:
1. Sailboats require a deep keel to counteract the effect of the wind on the sails. Canoes do not.
2. Canoes can travel when there is no wind. Sailboats cannot (unless they cheat and use an engine).

Similar:
They both float.
They both depend mainly on something other than gasoline or diesel for power.
They can be made from the same materials.
They are both old methods of transportation.
Different:
A canoe is much smaller than most sailboats.
A sailboat sometimes has an engine, while a canoe does not.
You can fit a canoe onto a sailboat, but you cannot fit a sailboat onto a canoe.

Sailboats are generally ballasted, canoes not.
Both generally have a round bilge.
Both can be double ended.
A canoe can have a sail
You should carry a paddle for a sailboat.
Both are designed to go easily through the water.
