Most cruises are about 2-3 hours and stick close to shore (within 3-4 miles).
You will see a variety of sea creatures, not just whales. Dolphins abound in the area (at least four species) as well as seals, sea lions, birds and sometimes even fish & jellyfish. (I saw a basking shark off of Santa Barbara once.)
Call the boat landing before you head out just to make sure they’re running on schedule and with a weather update.
Dress warmly & in layers. While it may be in the 70s on land, it may be in the 50s on the water and of course a little damp sometimes or windy.
Bring a camera, binoculars if you have them and a sense of enthusiasm and patience.
Usually the boats have small concessions like candy bars, snacks and drinks, but check ahead. Sometimes it’s nice to have a little snack with you.
If you’re prone to motion sickness stay on the bottom deck towards the back, as that’s where the movement is the least and keep your head up and looking towards the horizon to remind your body what’s “up”.
Have fun! The gray whale migration is great to watch, especially since you may get to see a mother and calf.

Just don’t expect to see Shamu. You have to go to Sea World for that. The grey whales are in transit from Alaska to Mexico and they don’t hang out and do tricks for the peoples. In any case it’s a good view and any day on the water is worth it.

It’s really great, I went twice when I was in elementary school but PLEASE make sure you don’t get seasick. I just so happen to get seasick and I…well “went overboard” more than once and it ruined what was a good time for everyone else. Other than that it was an experience to remember, our boat got real close to the whales, dolphins, and a lot more wildlife I didn’t get to see because I was busy “vomiting.” I wouldn’t recommend it if you get seasick, but the boat/trip you are going on may be different from the one we went on. Anyway, bring your camera and have a good time!
