Do private yachts have identification numbers engraved into them, like vehicle identification numbers in cars?

They are called Hull Identification Numbers (HIN) and are required by law. They are molded into the starboard side transom and the last 2 digits represent the year it was built.

Yes… law requires it… even on home-builts over a certain size. "Hull numbers" they are called… Not only are they found on little plates at the outside of the boat at the stern, the numbers have to be perminently painted on, or engraved on the inside of the hull or hulls (as in the case of a catamaran).

Yep, all boats need to have a serial number.
Of most fiberglass boats under a certain size you can find the serial number on the transom, usually starboard side, under the gunwale or the swim deck.
Here's a secret: the last two numbers in the serial are the year built.

Yes they all have Hull Ident Numbers (HIN) but they also must be marked externally with the registration information of the country of registration similar to a car's number plate and its number that you often see outside on the sides to the rear.
This is for proof of marine registration and insurance (sometimes called (wrongly) the Lloyds List number)

Yes, it's engraved into the hull by the builder.

The Hull Identification Number (HIN) is a unique, 12 digit number, assigned by the manufacturer, to vessels built after 1972. They will be stamped into the gel coat mold prior to the fiberglass layup. You will also find the HIN stamped, engraved or "glassed into a stringer or other interior portion of the hull, typically in the engine compartment.
