Bring some beer and some friends and have fun! Other then that, it really depends on what you’re fishing for.

Well, your profile and question leaves us with no tips as to where and what type of fishing. So We all will be taking a wild guess as to your needs.
A. – Go to a local fishing tackle shop and talk to the folks. Take it slow and do not be oversold.
B. – Find a local fishing club and hang around a bit to learn what they use and who has good basic gear that works for your target waters. Then copy them as much as your budget alows.
C. – A starter rod/reel combo at BoatersWorld or WestMarine and a few hooks are enough to get you going.
There will be a lot of guys here in YA that will say “go to Wal-Mart” and that my work for your area. Maybe. Follow the links below for ideas.

1. Go with someone that is experienced with the type of fishing that you want to get into
2. Keep it simple. Try mastering a few simple techniques in the first year.
3. Have fun! Avoid being too serious about catching fish and instead focus on the basics like casting and knot tying. Enjoy the scenery even if you cant catch fish
Let us know what type of fishing you want to do and we can help you with specifics (ie I want to fish bass in weedbeds, etc)

Oh FishSteelHead got there before me on this one regarding his angelfire link, follow that and you cant really go wrong, since your just starting out try walmart for the cheapest but OK quality fishing gear.
